Sinterklaas or St. Nicholas is a typical Dutch & Belgian holiday, where children receive once in awhile for a period of three weeks small gifts in their shoes. On December 5th he celebrates his ‘birthday’ and he brings a bag full of presents.
The current Santa Claus derives from Sinterklaas and you can still see the resemblances. But Sinterklaas has a crosier and miter and is from Spain, while Santa has a Christmas hat and is from the North Pole. There is also a big difference between the helpers: Santa has reindeer’s, Sinterklaas has ‘Zwarte Pieten’. Yes, you haven’t seen it wrong, he has black slaves. Even though that part is a bit controversial, for children it is one of the best days every year!
